Codex of 69 thick paper folios (27.1 x 17.6cm) with 2 paintings and leather binding.

Manuscript of Tuhfat al-Ahrar ("A Gift to the Free", based on Nizami's Makhzan al-Asrar, and Amir Khusrau's Matla` al-Anwar) composed in 1481 by Jami, dated 971H (1563-64), copied by Mahmud b. Ishaq al-Shihabi (d.1583), for Uzbek Shaybanid Abu'l-Ghazi `Abdullah b. Iskandar in Bukhara
Folios: 2 ruled text-columns of 14 lines nasta`liq (14.3x7.1cm) in black, with successive frames of floral scrolls and ruled lines (17.3x10cm) in varying colours (black, cream, blue, green) mounted on folios dyed different colours (light blue, pale pink, green, cream, yellow) with gold-painted floral scrolls and illuminated cartouches, lozenges and cloud-collars. Headings are in blue or gold nasta`liq reserved against light cross-hatching, tiny foliate scrolls and three-dot patterns.
Binding: red leather with gilt central medallion and cornerpieces with floral and foliate stamped decoration, plain blue paper doublures with watermarks "Polleri" and "Niccolo".
Fol.1v-2r: double-frontispiece: inscribed lobed cartouche with gold illumination + 6 lines black nasta`liq reserved against light cross-hatching and half-palmette scrolls, with flanking illuminated panels + inscribed lobed cartouche with gold illumination, all within black frame of floral scrolls and surrounding illumination.
Fol.29v: Yusuf enthroned.
Wearing a fiery halo, Yusuf is enthroned beneath a canopy in a garden, surrounded by an assembly of courtiers, old and young. He holds up a gold mirror in one hand.
Fol.48v: the tale of the ducks and the tortoise.
Two flying ducks carry a stick between them, with their friend the tortoise holding onto the stick with his mouth. Below, a crowd of men stands by the seashore, staring up in amazement.
