Scope content :
The Tamil Nadu Archives houses the records of various Departments of the Secretariat, erstwhile Board of Revenue, a few Heads of Departments, pre-mutiny records of Collectorate and District Courts and records of defunct Departments. The records dating back to 1657 A.D. (Dutch Records) are preserved in this Archives. The Secretariat records after three years of their disposal, are transferred to Tamil Nadu Archives for preservation. The records of a few Heads of Departments and erstwhile Board of Revenue are transferred to Archives after ten years of their disposal. The copies of Government Orders from the records of Secretariat are not granted to public or to any other Departments of Government other than Secretariat. There are six District Record Centres functioning at Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, Madurai and Thanjavur. They are also preserving records of more than thirty years old transferred from all the Government offices and Local bodies in the respective districts.
