A large part of the cartographical collection comes from the so-called Atlas of the City of Ghent, a large collection of loose maps, prints and topographic documents.
Originally they were part of the P. J. Goetghebuer collection, which was donated to the library by Ferdinand vander Haeghen in 1869, and the August Van Lokeren collection, which was purchased in 1872.
In 1933-1935 this Atlas of the city of Ghent was transferred to the City archive of Ghent, with the exception of the geographic maps and city maps, which were donated to the University Library. After Vander Haeghen's death the map collection was continually expanded.

The collection also contains a series of valuable manuscript maps and seven rare globes of Willem Jansz. Blaeu, Jacob Van Langren and Geraard Falcon.
The collection of Maps and plans also contains many maps of the County of Flanders and the Southern Low Countries and city maps of this area.

A second group of maps refers to foreign countries, most from the archives of the Indische Compagnie and the legacy of geographer Ferdinand Van Ortroy. In addition to (historical) road maps the collection also has a large collection of land registry plans of the Belgian municipalities between 1842 and 1879 published by P.C. Popp, and various publications of the topographic map of Belgium by the National Geographic Institute.

Atlases as such are not part of the cartographical collection, nor are they kept in a separate collection. They can be found among the early printed books and modern publications. They can be found in the alphabetical and systematic card catalogues in the catalogue room.
